Research Description

I work with Dr. Michael Krashes in NIDDK investigating the neural circuitry underlying motivated feeding behavior. Researchers often investigate feeding and other motivations in isolation with well-controlled experiments, but ethologically animals must flexibly choose between multiple motivated behaviors in real time to maximize survival chances. My research focuses on how circuits controlling feeding behavior influence other motivated behaviors including self-preservation, water-seeking, and social interaction behaviors. I utilize combinatorial behavioral assays, optogenetics, chemogenetics, photometry, optical imaging, slice electrophysiology and histology to investigate these circuits and their effects on behavior.
